Sally's Porch

January ends

Post date: Jan, 30 2012

What an amazing January. Mid-sixties today, and we're not complaining!

My son finally sold his house after many months of trrying. It was a huge relief, and kind of a surprise, since they had taken it off the market, planning to put it back up this spring. But good fortune happened and the magical, perfect buyer appeared. So this weekend they all moved in with us and will start looking for a house in the spring. Three generations under one roof....but from what I read and hear, it's a common occurence. And I think it will be a fun adventure. (And my friend Nancy's office will be put to good use as I bury myself in writing a new seaside knitters book).

Nell's shawl

Post date: Jan, 19 2012

I'm a little late in posting this, but Denise Davis sent me this photo of Nell's scarf (in Death by Cashmere), which she made for a friend. Beautiful! Thanks, Denise!

Sea Harbor

Post date: Dec, 31 2011

Just saw this on FB...and thought those who enjoy Sea Harbor and the Seaside Knitters would enjoy a video of Gloucester, one of the towns that has inspired the mystery series.

2012

The very same to you, dear Aimee. And may 2012 finally bring me the pleasure of meeting your wonderful daughter!

A joy-filled time for each of you

Post date: Dec, 24 2011

May this be a joy-filled, peaceful Christmas for each of you!

Warm greetings,

Sally

Many thanks

I just wish to thank you for all the reading pleasure you have given me in the first 2 Seaside knitting mysteries.  I'm a voracious reader of mystery stories and am overjoyed when I find an author who writes such enjoyable books as yours. I loved Death by Cashmere and Patterns in the Sand so much that I've ordered the following three books, and am impatient to receive them.

I live in France and rely heavily on Amazon to keep me supplied with books and information. It was through their recommendations that I found your books and I'm very grateful to them. I find the characters in the Thursday Night knitting group refreshingly nice, normal people trying to keep the town they love safe, friendly and a good place to live. They are people that we can identify with and would like to resemble.

Have a wonderful New Year.

Thank you once more

Valerie

thank you!

Valerie,

My warmest thanks for your wonderful note. You have inspired me to plunge into the next seaside knitters with heart and soul. Thank you! And I love having a reader in France. I hope your new year is filled with peace and joy.

Sally

Happy New Year

Thank you for your reply. I received the following 3 books in the Seaside Knitters series and have read them all. I loved them just as much as the first 2.

Your reply answered the question that I wanted to ask....Will there be other books in the series?

Have a very Happy Year 2012.

My very best wishes

Valerie

lobster traps for Christmas

Post date: Dec, 18 2011

In  A Holiday Yarn, the seaside knitters talk about the huge Sea Harbor tree decorated with lobster buoys and traps. In today's New York Times, the tree that inspired Sea Harbor's tree is featured (and,  nana said proudly, if you look closely, you may see my grandchildren, Ruby and Luke's, painted buoys!).

December

Post date: Dec, 04 2011

And it's coming in COLD. 30 today. I wish Don and I had gotten the tree last week when we had some 50+ days (and before I sprained an ankle!). But no matter, the tree will appear eventually.

A talented reader sent me a photo of the wedding shawl —not the book, but the shawl the seaside knitters are knitting for Izzy. Sharon Kenshalo, truly a talented knitter, knit the pattern in the book for her granddaughter who is getting married late spring. What an amazing gift.  I am in awe of Sharon's expertise and hopefully she will share photos of the wedding next year. In this photo you can see the lovely motifs she wove into the shawl.

December is a lively, joy-filled month--one filled with reminders of all we have...and the richness of giving. Thinking of all of you.

Thanksgiving and its trimmings

Post date: Nov, 27 2011

Lots of trimmings ....  in the form of a  long line of thanks. Not the least of which is for the wonderful readers who send me encouragement, keep me honest in my writing, and pass word of the seaside knitters books along to family and friends. I MOST CERTAINLY could not do this without you.

MANY THANKS, today and always. I hope your Thanksgiving was lovely, and your days ahead full of peace and joy.

Death by Cashmere

I have found your books and am about 3/4 of the way through Death by Cashmere.  My favorite books to read, and I read a lot, are mystery series.  I love to get to know the characters and follow them through from book to book.  I have read mysteries since I was old enough to get to the small town library when I was a Jr high student when my favorite writer was Phylis Whitney.  I posted a short note about this first book I am reading on my blog today because I am enjoying your book so much. I am also drawn to books that take place along shorelines because that is my favorite place to spend time away from our home in the woods here in Michigan.   We live about an hour from the nearest bookstore but since it is Christmas shopping time I expect I will be stopping there to pick up at least the next two in the series sometime soon.

thank you

Brenda--thank you for the wonderful note! I enjoyed reading about your town, your reading, your love for books. And I am very grateful for your blog posting, too. It's the personal recommendations for the Seaside Knitters that mean so much and keep the books in publication. Thank you and a joy-filled holiday season to you.

wonderful cozy office

Post date: Nov, 07 2011

My writing friend Nancy Pickard has found a lovely office space on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, right in the center of the shopping area. The window overlooks a street with shoppers strolling up and down, musicians sitting on corners with guitar cases open, fountains flowing (at least for a few more days....), coffee shops a-plenty, and the Apple store just around the corner. And, as lady luck would have it, it came with two desks! With the colder weather coming in and the porch furniture being put away, it's a most wonderful place to be. Warm, cozy, and hopefully filled with muses......

two new things....

Post date: Nov, 07 2011

A HOLIDAY YARN is now out in paperback. It's like seeing an old friend when I walk in bookstores.

And secondly, for a sneak preview of A FATAL FLEECE, read today's blog post on Dru Ann Love's musing page....

Welcome to my Porch!

Welcome to the place where I spend many, many hours writing, often with my porch-writing friend, Nancy Pickard (Nancy has the nice smile in the photo--she must have just finished a wonderful chapter in her next book). Since this porch is an enormous part of my writing life, it seemed a perfect name for a blog. Many book ideas are  hashed out here, many a spirit soothed when deadlines approach, and many a laugh shared as Nancy and I toast a successful writing day with a glass of Pinot Grigio.
